Home > Impact > Environment > No Fats, Oils, and Grease Please!
Please remember that when fats, oils, and grease (known as FOG) go down the drain, they don’t just disappear. As they cool – particularly during the autumn and winter holidays, when the outside weather becomes colder – they harden inside our pipes and sewer lines, sticking to the walls and trapping food scraps and other debris. Over time, these build-ups cause clogs, sewer backups, and even massive “fatbergs” that can damage our sewer system and environment.
Plus, they can even lead to an increase in your utility fees!
Why FOG is a Problem
What You Should Do at Home
For Restaurants and Food Businesses
Food service establishments are major contributors of FOG and are required to use grease traps or interceptors.
Protecting Our Community Together
Every household and business can help keep our sewers flowing freely. By keeping FOG out of the drain, you can prevent costly repairs, protect our water environment, and keep public health risks low.
For more information, recycling locations, or guidance for your business, please contact FOG@awwd.com or call (425) 743-4605 and ask to speak with someone in AWWD’s Wastewater Treatment Facility solid waste department.
